The movie itself might have been amusing, and if people had really quoted from it instead of simply slapping Shrek's face, name, or anything about escaping out of his godforsaken swamp on it, the memes could have been delightful. Children flocked to the endearing Shrek, who, despite being an ogre, had a heart of gold. There was also Donkey, the quick-witted devoted sidekick, and the lovely Princess Fiona. Adults, on the other hand, enjoyed the sarcastic humor, which made viewing the movies enjoyable regardless of age. It was thus unsurprising that the sequels were also a success. Shrek has risen to such heights that he gets his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Talk about celebrity!
To this day, the Shrek franchise's four episodes are Dreamworks' four highest-grossing films. Shrek's enduring popularity in pop culture encourages production firms to allow their property to be altered and iterated upon by fans. Even Disney has begun to see the light, understanding that the greatest way for an animated picture to stay current is to become a meme. Would Disney have allowed Ratatouille: The Musical go forward if it hadn't been for Shrek? Most likely not.
