Tabata-sensei has emphasized several times that Asta is an average youngster with nothing unique about him. If we accept his comments at their value, we may conclude that he was born without magical abilities by chance. Asta's lack of magic distinguishes him as a protagonist from the rest.
Asta got even more power once he formed a deal with Liebe (the devil in Asta's grimoire) as equals rather than a servant master relationship. He may now fully turn into a demon, replete with a small version of Liebe on his shoulders. It's known as the "Devil Union Form," and it enables Asta to improve their anti-magic skills. He can only stay in this shape for five minutes before having to wait thirty minutes before morphing again.
