The Adams Family (1960 -1999) Thing T. Thing, sometimes known as simply Thing, is The Adams Family's hand servant. This spooky hand was originally imagined as part of a basement Thing. This creature's appearance was so repulsive that humans could only tolerate to see its hand. That's why, in the early 1960s TV series (and for effect purposes), Thing would emerge from various boxes about the home. From the 1991 picture forward, special effects had advanced to the point where Thing could be shown as a fully detached limb. While the rest of The Adams Family seems to be human, to some extent, Thing is the sole supernatural entity and hence the most strange and creepy aspect of the flicks and TV program.
Phase IV goes much beyond the typical horror film about creepy crawling creatures vs. humans. Every frame of the picture is drenched with abstract 1970s themes made famous by films such as Zardoz, The Andromeda Strain, and Logan's Run, yet the idea is actually intriguing. In this picture, a swarm of super-intelligent ants starts to attack humans, forcing them to choose between attempting to converse with their insect adversaries and annihilating them completely. It's a strange film with a frightening finale that few films can match.
Variety's Joe Leydon described the picture as "unbounded by taste, constraint, or political correctness" and that "the outside borders of R-rated acceptability are strained, if not destroyed." "Practically certain to make you laugh till you're embarrassed of yourself," Leydon says. [12] Roger Ebert rated the picture three out of four stars, stating it "delivers the goods" and describing it as a "raucous, sarcastic assault on slasher flicks." Ebert panned the picture for lacking the "shattering force of Airplane!, which had the benefit of striking new ground." [8] The film's crass comedy, according to Bob Longino of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, detracted from the picture, noting that Scary Movie "dives so far into tasteless humor that it's a miracle it got a R classification instead of an NC-17." [19] Other critics, such as The New York Times' A.O. Scott, said that the jokes were "annoying less for their filth than for their fatigue."
