Unlike the hundreds of garbage horror films that are dumped into our culture every year, this film was truly frightening. The hand-held shots contributed significantly to the film's visual appeal. Unfortunately, because this film was so popular and memorable for its hand-held motif, it influenced almost every other b-list horror film, and now the shaky shot is commonplace in films like this. Why it's so bad: It happens about a half-hour into the film and is completely unexpected because the trailer doesn't reveal that she dies. In addition, Peter is so shocked that he drives straight home with her decapitated body, leaves it in the car, goes to his room, and tells no one. The next morning, their mother discovers the body in the car, and you can hear her heartbreaking reaction.
Okay, so I lied about that last one. And this is one of the film's best twists: the main character is a jerk who doesn't act heroically until the very end. This feature, in addition to really cranking up the laughs, is also what sets this film apart from the usual horror fare. Now for the important part: While Anton struggles with evil in his bumbling manner, aided by Mick and Pnub's wisecracks, the film delivers genuine horror. We get shocks, creeps, and gore, but not the "ha-ha got ya!" joke that most parodies give you right after. The scares are real, as are the deaths and dangers. Surprisingly, so are the belly laughs.
