Donkey's character has to be some kind of a noble horse in order to keep loyal to the medieval premise since Shrek takes place in a kingdom. However, as a parody of the knight-and-shining-armor cliche, having a donkey instead of a horse perform the sidekick role ââ a figure so bouncy and little in juxtaposition to the enormous, green ogre ââ is, well, funny.
