When the emergence of early photography coupled with people's short life spans, post-mortem photography became popular in Victorian England. They were sometimes referred to as "memento mori" photographs, which mean "remember you shall die." Because photography was relatively uncommon at the period, the death of a family member was often the first time a family contemplated shooting a picture. They did this to remember the dead and to have a picture of the departed, which was likely their only one.
And, in terms of final images of soon-to-be-murdered individuals, the Lawsons' heartbreaking image is only one example. Daylenn Pua of Oahu, Hawaii, went missing on Feb. 27, 2015, after informing his parents he was going to ascend the Haiku Stairs, often known as the "Stairway to Heaven." He was never seen again, but the final snapshot he gave his parents showed a hazy figure immediately behind him; the person, most likely his murderer, has never been identified.
