Nana, written and drawn by Ai Yazawa, initially debuted as a one-shot in Vols. 1 and 2 of Shueisha's Cookie, a sister magazine to Ribon, in 1999.

Nana is a bit of a renegade. She is friendless and scary in high school, seldom chatting to other pupils. This changed when she met Nobuo Terashima, who loaned her his CDs and exposed her to punk bands such as The Sex Pistols. Nobu cuts past Nana's frigid façade to discover that she is a kind individual. Nana does not contest the allegations when she is wrongly accused of prostitution and expelled. She subsequently regrets her actions, claiming that the event may have contributed to her grandmother's death. Nana, on the other hand, buys herself a crimson frock as a present. Nana wears the red outfit to a punk concert with Nobu, where she meets Ren Honjo for the first time. Nana is smitten with Ren and accepts his invitation to join the band he's forming with Nobu and a buddy called Yasushi Takagi. (Nobu later explains that he introduced them since Ren appeared to be the only one who could connect to her, but Nana rescued Ren just as much as he did Nana.)
