The fourth major chapter of Doom was formally revealed as being in development by id Software in May 2008, while no details about the title's intended release date were provided. The game's development has apparently encountered multiple difficulties since its original announcement, with Bethesda Softworks stepping in as the game's new publisher in 2011. On February 19th, 2014, Bethesda Softworks revealed intentions to release a multiplayer-only restricted alpha of the game for select players under the altered title Doom, after many rounds of significant changes in the development team and the game idea.
