The beings are humanoid in form, towering taller than typical humans and built masculinely. Their heads are devoid of features save for a big mouth with human-like fangs and keen talons for biting prey. They are covered in a black hide and have no outward sexual features or unique marks. There are two varieties known to exist, each with its unique set of functions. The bulk are simple drones that attack whatever they come across, with no distinguishing characteristics other than their hostility. The second variety is quite uncommon and usually hides amid its regular buddies. When this variation is harmed or killed, it bursts and discharges a harmful chemical into the surrounding environment. This toxin is composed of a large number of RC Cells.
Ken seems to be in severe condition at the hospital, and the doctor transplants Rize's organs into Ken's body. Ken, thankfully, lives and returns to his usual life. However, it is at this point that Ken understands he has undergone a significant transformation. He found it difficult to be himself after recuperating from a tragic death. He disliked the flavor of whatever meal he saw or tried, and he even vomited after eating it. He desired human flesh and blood, though, since he now had the organs of a ghoul.
The injured Kaneki tries to find his way to Anteiku café, where he finds Hide attempting to brew coffee for him. Hide had covertly participated in the operation as a CCG soldier and had been gravely wounded. Kaneki recalls brighter moments in Anteiku at the same period. Hide falls from blood loss and drops out in his arms, eventually dying. Kaneki marches toward the CCG, carrying his closest friend's corpse in his arms. Kaneki's human companion was being carried through the streets by the whole CCG forces, who were all taken aback. He keeps walking till Arima arrives in front of him. Kaneki realized there was no way to avoid a confrontation since Arima was waiting for him. The scene cuts as Kaneki carefully lowers Hide's corpse into the snow. Their struggle isn't seen in the anime, but later on, Arima looks to be standing and Kaneki is nowhere to be found, and the scene shifts back to Touka reopening the café.
